Starting fencing
Fencing is a wonderful sport for young children, helping them to develop hand-eye coordination, balance and core strength along with valuable life skills such as self-discipline, patience and good sportsmanship.
What is Mini Fencing?
Mini Fencing is for smaller children aged from seven to eight. It involves fencing with super lightweight plastic weapons. This minimises the time spent getting "kitted up", allowing the children to focus on developing correct technique, agile footwork, distance control and good timing.
Prospective Mini Fencers do not need any prior experience of sport to join our club; almost all of our students start from square one, however Mini Fencers must be at least seven years old.
Every child is additionally assessed on a case-by-case basis. In order for a child to join Mini Fencing we must be confident that they are mature enough to meet the following criteria:
We provide all of the fencing equipment required and upon joining, and all children receive individual instruction on how to use it safely before joining in the action.

- They can remember and follow safety rules
- They can follow the coach's technical instructions
- They can complete a full hour session without getting distracted or becoming disruptive
- They are resilient enough to comfortably endure hits from plastic blades
We provide all of the fencing equipment required and upon joining, and all children receive individual instruction on how to use it safely before joining in the action.
What does membership include?
Haverstock Fencing Club aims to make starting fencing as simple and inexpensive an experience as possible for our mini fencers. We do not charge a sign-up fee. The termly contribution is all-inclusive - all required equipment is provided on site.
Our mini fencing programme is based around a weekly Thursday training session, which includes a warm up game, group exercises and plastic sparring supervised by a British Fencing qualified coach.
Mini Fencing membership is only £99 per term.
This contribution helps to cover our basic costs, which, when combined with thousands of hours of volunteer work, allow us to keep fees about 50% below market rate.
